Young Feminist Frontline Crisis Response to the Earthquake in Syria and Turkey

On February 6, 2023, a devastating earthquake struck southern Turkey and northwest Syria, marking it one of the deadliest natural disasters since the 2010 Haiti earthquake. In the immediate aftermath, girls and young feminists in Turkey and Syria responded with remarkable speed and agility—and they continue to lead critical crisis and humanitarian response efforts that remain urgently needed. Even with the rapidly shifting context the analysis, experiences and recommendations shared in this report are as relevant as ever — if not more so. Syria, Turkey, and the broader region urgently call for material solidarity and collective action. We must push for feminist resourcing in crisis response through a decolonial approach that centres the leadership and experience of communities in the region.
